FEBRUARY: defined as winter on our modern calendar
However – it has long been celebrated as the start of spring by the inhabitants of northern Europe – for good reasons:
- evenings are growing noticeably lighter and the sun’s arc rising higher every day
- sap is rising and buds are swelling
- bird behaviour and song has shifted in intention
- early flowers are out in earnest
What have I noticed this week?
The early flowers appear so delicate and fragile, and yet they are tough and have adapted to cope with unpredictable and harsh adverse conditions because the benefits outweigh the risks:
- they use the “power of small” to great effect
- they use timing to optimise their advantage
- they thrive in their niche area
Next time you have a chance to get out into nature, have a look for:
- alder catkins, hazels (see if you can find one of the tiny red flowers) and the earliest blackthorn blossom benefitting from the lack of competing foliage
- the hellebores, celandines, aconites and even some early primroses and violets growing low and sheltered but able to make the most of the light reaching the ground before the trees risk extending their tender leaves.
Notice what you notice.
Ask yourself how YOU would like to take a leaf out of the “book of February flowers”?
